For years I thought engagement was something I had to create. Better games. More exciting activities. More energy. What I eventually realised was that many students were not disengaged because they lacked motivation. They were disengaged because they did not feel successful. When students feel confused, overwhelmed or convinced they are "bad at languages", engagement disappears pretty quickly. One of the biggest shifts in my teaching was learning how to build success first and let confidence grow from there.
